About the event
As Washtenaw County commemorates its 200th Anniversary, the AACHM is proud to present a premier tour series that places the African American narrative at the heart of our county’s history. Sponsored by Washtenaw County, this series is a vital exploration of the Black families, veterans, and visionaries whose "Grace and Grit" built the foundations of our community over the last two centuries.
We aren't just celebrating a date; we are honoring the people whose stories have often been moved to the margins. Join us as we bring these legacies to the center stage of the Washtenaw Bicentennial.

2-4pm Meet at Wheeler Park for a leisure walk up 4th Ave to the new Dunbar Towers near the Farmer’s market and return down 5th Ave. This tour helps one view this rapidly changing neighborhood as it was in the 1900s, from the perspective of docent Scott McFadden, whose family lived here over 100 years. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes appropriate for weather. If raining more than a drizzle, tour will postpone to Sunday,

9/19 UGRR Bus Tour

10am-1pm This tour takes you first to the museum for a visit before leaving to see sites once connected to the local Underground Railroad network. It highlights the work of Black and white abolitionists, and the experience of self-emancipators who traveled through Washtenaw. There will be one rest stop.

12:30-2:30pm Meet at Ypsi District Library-MI Plaza and join Ypsilanti historian Matthew Siegfried on a walking tour down Adams St. Guests will visit sites central to this historic neighborhood, and learn about brave men and women who built and sustained a community that has thrived for 200 years.
